Interests: painting, plastic, visual artist

Hello, my name is Virginia Rivas. I am a Spanish artist. I reside in Hervás, a small town in the north of Extremadura. I am part of the group of women artists from Madrid BNM Blanco, Negro y Magenta and AVAEX, the association of Visual Artists and Associates of Extremadura.
I have a degree in Fine Arts (2006) from the University of Salamanca with a specialty in Painting. And Diploma in Advanced Studies in Art History (2012) from the University of Extremadura with the specialty of Video Art.

During the university period I obtained an Erasmus Scholarship (2003/2004) and I was able to study for a year at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (Italy). And later I received a Grundtvig Scholarship (2013/2014) to work as a Painting Teacher at the Università delle LiberEtà di Udine (Italy).
Throughout my career, I have obtained various awards, including the Art Nalón Plastic Arts Award, the City of Badajoz Painting Award, the UNED Plasencia Painting Award, among others. And several scholarships such as the recent Aid to Creation S.O.S Art / Culture of VEGAP or the Aid to Visual Artists of the Junta de Extremadura, among others.
I work with the DDR Art Gallery in Madrid with which I have been present for two years at the Art Madrid Contemporary Art Fair within the ONE PROJECT project, curated in 2019 by Nerea Ubieto and in 2020 by Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta. I have also participated in other fairs such as FIG Bilbao 2019 (Spain), JustXL Lisboa 2019 (Portugal), Arte Cremona 2014 (Italy), Art Santa Fe International Art Fair 2013 (USA).

My work

My Work

I have exhibited individually at the WIPO World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, the El Brocense Art Gallery in Cáceres, the DA2 Domus Artium Contemporary Art Center in Salamanca or the Galleria d’Arte La Loggia di Udine. And collectively in the Sala Pazo de San Marcos de Lugo (2020), the Museum of Women of Costa Rica (2020), in the Assembly of Extremadura (2018), in the MUBA Museum of Fine Arts of Badajoz (2015) , at the Galleria d'Arte Picenum in Cingoli, Italy (2015) or at the OPTICA International Video Art Festival in Paris, France (2009).
Since 2006 I have been working as an Art Teacher in the European territory giving workshops within educational projects related to plastic and visual arts.

Regarding my work, I work with various media such as installation, video and light boxes, but the material that manages to define me is painting. I investigate form and matter through abstraction and gesture in search of a palette of my own in which textures, naive lines and short texts that move between chance and intention burst. I delve into human behavior through my own experiences as a guideline to investigate the individual-environment nexus and create a sociological, plural and contemporary discourse where I explore the relationship between the work, the viewer and the space.
I am currently immersed in a project entitled VARIATIONS in which, based on the readings and research on the different theories of color by Goethe, Newton, Eva Heller or John Berger, I analyze the surrounding chromatics and how it influences the individual based on his emotional state, the current political situation and the historical context. In parallel I am carrying out an educational project that culminates in an artistic installation under the title: ARTISTS WOMEN: 500 years, 2 decades, organized by AUPEX Association of Popular Universities of Extremadura in collaboration with the Cáceres Provincial Council.  In which I highlight the work of women artists from the 16th century to the present, with a selection of five contemporary Spanish artists: María Gimeno, Diana Larrea, Concha Mayordomo, Verónica Ruth Frías and Yolanda Domínguez who work on the concept of women , the fight for gender equality and the recognition of the female artist. And a selection of fifteen fundamental artists from our history such as Lavinia Fontana, Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassat, Alice Austen, Corita Kent or Helen Frankenthaler.
In the artistic installation that accompanies the masterclass, I recreate an interactive Art History classroom where the public can sit down to learn about the work of these artists, learning about their life and work. I hope you find my work interesting and I am grateful to have been invited to these SWS International Conferences on Arts and Humanities that are held in one of my favorite cities such as Florence.
